Abstract: Northshore Senior Center (NSC) is focused on positive aging - promoting the physical, emotional and social well-being of older adults. We are committed to serving the full spectrum of seniors, from the frail elder who requires assistance meeting the needs of daily life, to the healthy, active senior who wants to use their lifetime of skills and experience to make a difference in our community through volunteering. NSC has the capacity, the skills, the passion and the environment to provide affordable, accessible and cost-effective services to older adults and their families in north and east King County, keeping them as healthy and independent as possible.
Founded in 1972, the Senior Center has grown from a small band of 50 older adults to a lively community of over 7,100 in 2007. Over 500 dedicated volunteers, with the support of staff, have designed and monitored every aspect of programming, bringing ever changing and vital programs and services to those over 55, and adults of all ages with disabilities. The Senior Center has become a national model with an impressive string of awards and program replication sites. NSC is innovative and adaptive in our programming - creating programs that do not exist to meet needs that do. |

Abstract:
The Northshore YMCA provides a variety of activities that promote active healthy lifestyles for older adults. We partner with Healthways* to provide a variety of weekly SilverSneakers® classes including SilverSplash® aquatics classes. We also partner with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Greater Washington Chapter, to offer MS Yoga and MS Aquatics classes by instructors who are physician-trained to deliver safe and effective classes to those who are afflicted with MS. Other partnering organizations include Lance Armstrong LiveSTRONG Foundation, Stanford University, Children’s Hospital, Swedish Hospital, Group Health, and more.
Other suitable exercise activities that we offer to active older adults are EnhanceFitness®, Tai Chi, Life Fitness Circuit, walking groups, 101 Strength Training, no-impact Land Aerobics, senior tea time (free & open to the community), Brain Agility classes and cross country skiing & snowshoeing tips. We also invite you to join us for a National Senior Fitness Day celebration in May every year!
We also offer services such as cholesterol screening, blood pressure testing and flu shots. But one of the best things about joining in YMCA active older adult activities is the social connections we make with each other. We know our members by name. We know their stories. We laugh together and we cry together. We are a community.
*The SilverSneakers® Fitness Program is offered by leading Medicare health plans and Medicare Supplement carriers throughout the country at no additional cost. |
